Google launched a new Search Labs experiment: Web Guide
"uses uses AI to intelligently organize the search results page, making it easier to find information and web pages"
They first announced their plans for an "AI-organized results page" in May 2024, saying:
"Soon, when you’re looking for ideas, Search will use generative AI to brainstorm with you and create an AI-organized results page that makes it easy to explore. You’ll see helpful results categorized under unique, AI-generated headlines, featuring a wide range of perspectives and content types. ...you’ll start to see this new AI-organized search results page when you look for inspiration — starting soon with dining and recipes, followed by movies, music, books, hotels, shopping and more."
What's different with their July 2025 announcement is:
- Web Guide doesn't just organize & categorize results under headlines - it uses query fan-out like AI Mode "concurrently issuing multiple related searches to identify the most relevant results"
◦ Of course there's the token reference to "better surface web pages you may not have previously discovered"
- They recommend trying it for open-ended searches like, 'how to solo travel in Japan' , or for longer more detailed queries in multiple sentences like, 'My family is spread across multiple time zones. What are the best tools for staying connected and maintaining close relationships despite the distance?'
For now, it's only available if you're opted into experiments in Search Labs, from the Web tab, eventually making its way to the "All" results tab.
I gave it a try with a few open-ended searches in the account I've got signed up for Search Lab experiments, but no luck so far.
